“Football at its most unpredictable – a substitute coming on and making an immediate impact in stoppage time. These are the moments that define championship campaigns.” – Former England international and football analyst Alan Shearer
Hansen Rescues Point in Thrilling Preston Encounter
Middlesbrough maintained their position at the top of the Championship table thanks to substitute Sontje Hansen’s dramatic stoppage-time equalizer against Preston North End.
The 23-year-old Dutchman made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, scoring just three minutes after his introduction to secure a valuable 2-2 draw at Deepdale.
Lewis Dobbin had initially put the visitors ahead with a sublime solo effort early in the match, showcasing the attacking quality that has propelled Middlesbrough to the summit of the table.
Preston fought back admirably, with Matt Targett finding a deserved equalizer in the 72nd minute before Jordan Storey appeared to have won it for the hosts with a glancing header in the 88th minute.
However, Hansen’s close-range finish after Preston failed to clear their lines from a corner ensured the points were shared in this pulsating encounter.
Championship Title Race Heats Up
The draw proved sufficient for Middlesbrough to maintain their position at the top of the table, as nearest challengers West Bromwich Albion missed their opportunity to close the gap after suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Derby County.
Ryan Mason’s West Brom side experienced their first league loss of the campaign, having previously collected an impressive 10 points from their opening four matches.
It was former Albion player Andreas Weimann who delivered the decisive blow, displaying individual brilliance in the 84th minute to slot past goalkeeper Josh Griffiths into the bottom corner.
West Brom nearly salvaged a point when Jayson Molumby’s powerful half-volley crashed against the crossbar, but the rebound eluded the home players.
“To concede after just one shot and it’s in the 84th minute, it’s not usual that happens and I thought we didn’t deserve to lose,” lamented West Brom manager Ryan Mason after the match.
Stoke City Rise to Second Place
Stoke City capitalized on West Brom’s slip-up to climb to second place in the Championship standings.
Bosun Lawal’s first goal for the club proved decisive in a 1-0 home victory against Birmingham City, who suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time under manager Chris Davies.
The Birmingham boss acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, stating: “We started the game too slowly. That was the reason for the defeat. We were too slow to win duels, second balls and didn’t impose ourselves in what was going to be a challenging start.”
Bristol City Impress with Dominant Display
Bristol City rose to third place after maintaining their unbeaten league start with an emphatic 3-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday.
An own goal from Harry Amass and strikes from Emil Riis and Anis Mehmeti – all in the first half – secured a comfortable victory for the visitors at Hillsborough.
This impressive performance continues Bristol City’s strong start to the season, establishing them as genuine promotion contenders in the early stages of the campaign.

League One: Late Drama Preserves Cardiff’s Unbeaten Run
In League One, Yousef Salech’s header seven minutes into stoppage time extended Cardiff City’s unbeaten start to the season as they maintained their position at the top with a 1-1 draw at Stockport County.
Salech glanced in Chris Willock’s cross at the death after Stockport had led through Oliver Norwood’s 34th-minute penalty.
That result leaves Cardiff level on points with Bradford City, who secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over Huddersfield Town.
Bobby Pointon scored twice and Josh Neufville added a third, all before half-time, with Huddersfield getting an 80th-minute consolation through Zépiqueno Redmond.
Barnsley moved up to third after edging out Reading 3-2 at Oakwell, climbing above Stevenage on goals scored after the latter were held to a 1-1 draw at Mansfield Town.
Leicester City Salvage Point Despite Red Card
In one of the weekend’s most dramatic encounters, Ricardo Pereira came off the bench to rescue 10-man Leicester City a point in a 2-2 draw at Oxford United.
The match took a significant turn when Aaron Ramsey was shown a straight red card on his Foxes debut for a reckless 23rd-minute tackle on Filip Krastev.
Will Lankshear had fired Oxford into an early lead, which was soon canceled out by Jordan Ayew.
An own goal from Boubakary Soumaré at a corner then gave Oxford a 2-1 lead at the break, only for Pereira, who came on at half-time, to fire home an equalizer 10 minutes after the restart.
This was the first meeting between the teams since another 2-2 draw in April 1994.
QPR Triumph at Wrexham
Wrexham’s challenging start to life in the Championship continued as they remain winless at home this season following a 3-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers.
The match was played in front of Hollywood co-owner Ryan Reynolds, who witnessed his team’s struggles firsthand.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson acknowledged the transition period his team is experiencing: “We’ve changed the squad around completely. There was always going to be a period at the start where it doesn’t go completely as you’d want it. We’ve got to work this week on the training pitch to put on a performance like we showed at Millwall two weeks ago.”
Blackburn Secure Valuable Away Win
Japanese midfielder Ryoya Morishita’s first goal for Blackburn Rovers secured a 1-0 win at Watford.
Blackburn manager Valérien Ismaël expressed his satisfaction with Morishita’s performance: “When I knew we had the chance to get him, I told the club I would wait. The wait was worth it. Today you could see why he can be very important for us.”
League Two: Swindon and Gillingham Set the Pace
In League Two, Aaron Drinan’s double helped Swindon Town come from behind to beat Harrogate Town 3-1 and move top on goal difference.
Gillingham are level on points after Josh Andrews’ header earned them a 1-0 win over Notts County.
Salford City are a further two points back after Dan Udoh’s brace helped them to a 3-1 win away to Shrewsbury Town, moving them above Walsall who were held to a 1-1 draw at Fleetwood Town.
Millwall Salvage Late Draw Against 10-Man Charlton
Millwall substitute Ra’ees Bangura-Williams’ late equalizer clinched a 1-1 draw at 10-man Charlton Athletic, who had led through Sonny Carey and saw Kayne Ramsay sent off in the second half.
Carey opened his account for the hosts with a first-time strike that found the bottom corner through a crowded penalty area after goalkeeper Steven Benda could only fist Conor Coventry’s corner to the edge of the box.
Charlton were reduced to 10 men when Ramsay received his second yellow card from referee Robert Madley – both for fouls on the dangerous Aidomo Emakhu.
Bangura-Williams capitalized on the numerical advantage, reacting quickest after Thomas Kaminski was only able to parry Luke Cundle’s shot into his path.
Charlton manager Nathan Jones described Ramsay’s dismissal as “a moment of madness” and felt it cost his club a first victory over Millwall in more than 29 years.
“When you are on a booking and you lunge in then you know you are risking something. You have to be cleverer than that. Top defenders stay on their feet and make people work for something – when they go to ground it is a last resort or they know they can win it,” explained Jones.
“It is a learning curve for him. He’s a young boy and he has so much ability, he has been outstanding for us. That was categorically the turning point.”
